Something to help the crying puppy: at night put a hot-water bottle in his bed, behind the blanket. This fakes the warmth of his mums body. Also (and I know this sounds crazy, but it worked with my Lab puppy) a clock, one of those with really loud tic-tac sounds, also behind his blanket - this pretends to be the beating of his mum's heart. With both of these he'll feel not so alone and after a couple of nights might not cry as much. Or at all!
