About Me

IMG_6060

“I’m not going to start a blog until I have a name I love.” That's what I kept telling myself way back in October of 2008. I spent about a month going back and forth on this name or that. Late one night in November “Honey & Jam” popped into my head. I was drinking tea - with honey and eating toast - with jam. It just worked. In some weird way, it fit me.

I’m Hannah Queen, baker and photographer. I'm 21 and I live in Georgia, I was homeschooled and I love Jesus. I like simple things, fresh ingredients and flowers, tea with honey, good music, bluegrass and big band, trips to the farmers market and early mornings. I’m the happiest when I’m in the kitchen, creating something tasty, and when I’m behind my camera, taking pictures of everything I see.

ReadyMade, The Kitchn, Real Simple (and here too!), Gourmet Live (here too), food 52, Eliza Magazine, Artful Blogging Magazine, Style at Home, Lily, Foodies of the World, Saveur (and here) Food News Journal, N.E.E.T. Magazine, Women's Health Magazine, Peanut Butter & Co, The Kitchen Generation, Fine Cooking, Fork Magazine, Chow.com

If you have any questions, I’d love to answer them! Send me an email at honeyandjam@ymail.com.

A couple of FAQ:

What camera do you shoot with? All shots before September 2010 were taken with either a Canon digital rebel xsi or a Canon digital rebel xt, with a 50mm f1.8 lens or a 50mm f1.4 lens. All shots after September 2010 are taken with a Canon 5d mark ii with a 50mm f1.4 lens.

Where do you get your props? They come from all over the place. Ikea, target, anthropologie, shopterrain.com, etsy shops.

What kind of lighting set up do you use? I shoot exclusively with natural light. I have a table set up by a window, and use a piece of foam core board to reflect.

What's your favorite food? Bread. And roasted chicken. And roasted sweet potato. Oh, and these brownies.

  35. Hello from a fellow foodie/blogger, Hannah. I can only echo all the good comments above... beautiful, inspiring... such talent and grace.

I'm curious about the photo for your header. I'm assuming you took it. What I'd really like to know about is that tea cup -- it is so unique and... I don't know, rustic. It looks like the work of a skilled pottery maker. Can you share info about it?

Keep up your excellent work. I was thrilled to find the German Apple Cake recipe -- looks and sounds like the cake my husband's late German mom used to make for him. I would love to be able to replicate it for him.

  36. Hi Lynn! That cup is from shopterrain.com and it's called a "Wabi Sabi" mug. I love it!

  37. I found your blog through my cousin's site and am now hooked. I love your pictures, and of course the food. How fun that you were homeschooled--my husband and I were both homeschooled (we met in the second grade at a Book It! pizza party) and very much enjoyed the experience.

  39. Dear Hannah,
I came across your blog from a fellow flickrite who made me their contact. In her caption below her picture she sites you as her images viewed for the tasra365 project. Please excuse the fact I'm not computer savvy and don't know how to hyperlink. I don't have a MAC. Here's the flickr site who introduced you http://www.flickr.com/photos/priti_j/4388227247/.
Now, I would like to tell you that I am simply impressed with your knowledge of photography and command of writing style. I could contribute it to homeschooling but I've met incredible young adults like yourself who learned in public schools. Ultimately, it comes down to desire, will, ambition and passion. You have these great attributes.

Very soon, you will be discovered by magazines if you haven't already. Take your talent along with your love for Jesus and enjoy your future.

You are a the breath of fresh air needed today.
    Good luck in your endeavors.

BTW, I am number 315 to follow you.

Your blog is my favorite one to read. I love your simple, nature-first photography and your posts about all of the wonderful things in your life. Thank you for providing great reading! I have one question for you: do you use a photo editing program? If so, which one would you recommend? How do you get the words in your blog title on the egg picture? Thanks for the advice, and I'm looking forward to reading all your future posts!

So I was trying to figure out if just eating a piece of toast and one fried egg for breakfast was bad for you and I fell in LOVE with a picture of yours of a piece of toast with egg so I clicked on it....that was about 4 hours ago. Now I am basically stalking you (>,<). Your sites are amazing, your images are GORGEOUS and as a photographer I love running into other peoples blogs and websites. I couldn't ever think of a cute little name for anything I do blog/business wise so I just settled for something with my name on it but looking at your stuff I now want to think of something more unique. 94. Hi from Ohio. I came upon your blog a few months ago and am very impressed. Your photography is beautiful and inspiring and although I haven't tried any of your recipies I'm hoping to do so soon. I see that you've come to a slowing of posts, I recognize that too, especially after your experiences with your Mother last year. Writing can be very theraputic, so please keep on doing it. Hoping you have a great holiday season this year spent doing the things you love.

  96. Seriously, how have I never seen your blog before? And you should hear the rabbit trail I followed to find you... last week my cousin in Colorado told me about a blog a friend of her's has and said it would be something I would really enjoy cause I really like to make things from scratch, well her friend in turn mentioned on FB today about a blog she really likes... and his blog is in... Australia. So after taking a gander through his blog I see a blog that he has listed that looks really interesting... hmm honey & jam.... two things I'm really passionate about! So my journey started in Indiana, headed to Colorado, then Australia, and now Georgia! Across the world and back!!

(now if only i could come up with a name for my blog that i really like... you would think that at 47 i would be a bit more decisive.... not so but thankfully the Lord is patient!)

Well it was nice "meeting" you and I can hardly wait to try so many of your recipes!
